Timing is crucial when considering SIL for yourself (or a loved one).  Finding the right fit and compatibility with the home and housemates is key, and this can take more time than you think – so it’s best to get things moving as soon as you think you might want SIL.

This article will help you and your family understand the right time to start this process, the NDIS SIL requirements, and what to look for when choosing your SIL supports.

What is SIL under NDIS?

Supported Independent Living (SIL) helps you live more independently in a home environment. Supported Independent Living can be funded through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) in Australia.

SIL is funded under the Assistance with Daily Life category, in the Core Supports budget. In some cases, the Plan may not specify ‘SIL’ – it may instead be listed as ‘Daily Personal Activities’ or ‘Home & Living’.

SIL provides support to NDIS participants who need help with daily tasks like:

  • Personal care (showering, getting dressed and ready for the day)
  • Household tasks
  • Medication management
  • Cooking meals
  • Attending appointments
  • Other skill development to meet home and living goals

What is the Difference Between SIL and other NDIS-funded Housing Options?

People often confuse SIL and Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA).

What is SDA?

SDA provides funding to access a property or residential setting that meets an individual’s environmental needs. It’s about the physical home itself, providing suitable housing for people with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs. For example, SDA housing might include modifications such as:

  • Wider doorways
  • Hobless showers
  • Automated doors

How is SIL different?

SIL, on the other hand, provides necessary round-the-clock support services to help participants live independently in their own homes or shared living arrangements. This focuses on the supports needed to live independently in the home, not the home itself.

This can look like support workers coming into your home to provide supervision with daily living tasks, or support to help you complete them. Or in some cases, you may be able to share supports (and costs) with your housemates – this can be worked out in your service agreements with your providers.

The funding mechanism is also different; SDA sits within the Capital supports budget, while SIL is under Core support.

SIL Funding Requirements for NDIS Participants

To access SIL, participants must have SIL funding approved in their NDIS Plan or via another government-funded scheme. This funding is based on the ‘reasonable and necessary’ criteria set by the NDIS; as with all things NDIS, it must be for supports that are specific to your disability needs and your plan goals.

The amount of SIL funded by the NDIS depends on how much support you require. You will need a quote from a SIL provider, and supporting documentation (such as from an OT) to prove that this is the right avenue for you.

3 Signs that it’s Time to Start Looking for SIL

Changing your living arrangements can seem daunting, but SIL can provide greater independence, confidence, and safety for those who need support with everyday tasks. You or your loved one may need to start looking into SIL if:

1. Your support needs are increasing

If you find yourself struggling more with daily tasks such as cooking, cleaning, or personal care, it might be time to consider Supported Independent Living.

Additionally, if you require overnight support or supervision, this could be an indicator that your current living situation may no longer be suitable to support your independence.

2. You need more suitable arrangements

As parents or carers age, they may not be able to provide long-term support. Moving out of the family home can help you gain more independence and align with your capacity-building Plan goals under the NDIS.

3. Your support needs are not being met

If your existing support, such as in-home care, is no longer meeting your needs, it might be time to look for more structured support.

Supported Independent Living with trained staff can provide the necessary round-the-clock assistance to ensure your needs are adequately met.

Why Early Planning is Essential

Getting into SIL typically takes time – you may be waiting a while between assessment and moving in – so starting early can ensure a smoother transition into your own space. Early planning can help factor time required for:

  1. Setting up your Plan, either as a first time participant or to add SIL
  2. Preparing for and gaining necessary approvals (including supplying any supporting evidence required from allied health professionals)
  3. Waiting for the your ideal home to become available

How Long Does the SIL Process Typically Take?

It can take several months from the initial assessment to moving into the new living arrangement. SIL applications are assessed by the NDIA Home & Living Team, and this can take a long time. Your Support Coordinator can help you to submit, provide evidence and quotes, and find the best housing option for you – this can help you avoid further delays from back-and-forth with the NDIA or providers.

Because of this potential wait, it’s important to have discussions with your NDIA Planner early when considering adding SIL. The sooner you start, the sooner you can get into your new living arrangements.

How to Find the Right SIL for You

1. Review your NDIS Plan

Start by ensuring SIL is included in your Core Support. If it’s not, you may need to request a plan review to have it added. You can do this at any time during the life cycle of your plan – you do not need to wait for your plan to renew before requesting SIL if you need it.

2. Speak to your Support Coordinator or Plan Manager

Your Support Coordinator or Plan Manager can provide guidance on available SIL providers and funding options. They can help you navigate NDIS requirements and connect you with suitable services.

3. Research and visit SIL providers

Take the time to research and visit different SIL providers. Look for home and living options that meet your needs in terms of location, support staff, and facilities. Don’t hesitate to ask potential providers questions about their services, and the support they offer, to ensure it meets your requirements and is a good fit.

4. Applying for SIL and getting funding approval

This step involves working closely with your NDIS planner and the chosen SIL provider to ensure all requirements are met. This is when you will submit the necessary paperwork to get funding approval.

Common Challenges with SIL and How to Avoid Them

1. Funding approval delays

One common challenge is experiencing delays in funding approvals. If you work with your NDIS Planner or Support Coordinator to support the approval process, they can help ensure all necessary paperwork is completed accurately and submitted promptly – therefore reducing the likelihood of delays.

2. Navigating the NDIS

Understanding and navigating the NDIS process can be complex and overwhelming. To address this, work closely with your Support Coordinator or Plan Manager. They can guide you through the necessary steps, help you understand your NDIS plan, and ensure you have the required funding for SIL.

3. Limited SIL options in your area

One common challenge is finding a SIL home that meets all your needs and preferences. This includes location, support staff, and facilities. To overcome this:

  • Research and visit different SIL providers who are experienced and trusted.
  • Ask detailed questions about their services and support to ensure they align with your requirements.
  • Reach out to people-first providers to ensure your wants and needs are taken seriously

4. Finding the right housemates

Matching with housemates who have similar support needs is crucial for a suitable living environment. To achieve this, work with your provider to find compatible housemates.

Choose a provider that listens and takes the time to ensure compatibility is thoroughly checked. This can go a long way in helping you achieve reliable, stable, and long-term housing. This ensures that everyone in the home receives the appropriate level of support and can live comfortably together.
