If you visit one of Mosaic’s Supported Independent Living (SIL) homes in Brookdale, you’ll quickly notice colourful paintings displayed throughout the house. Bright patterns, vibrant colours, and creative designs that add personality to the space.
Behind many of those artworks is our client and resident, Rosie, a talented artist whose love of painting has become an important part of her daily life.
Rosanna, known to her support workers and friends as Rosie, has lived in a Mosaic home for more than nine years. She enjoys spending time with staff, listening to music, completing puzzles, watching her favourite TV shows, and getting involved in activities around the home.
But of all her interests, painting is the activity she loves most.
A lifelong love of painting
Rosie’s connection with art began many years ago when her grandmother introduced her to dot painting. What started as a fun activity they could enjoy together soon grew into a lifelong passion.
Those early experiences left a lasting impression. Even today, painting continues to bring Rosie a sense of enjoyment, relaxation, and achievement.
Over the years, Mosaic staff noticed how naturally Rosie was drawn to art. During community outings, she would often stop to admire Indigenous artwork, taking in the colours, patterns, and fine details. She enjoyed exploring different styles and would talk about the pieces that caught her eye.
Seeing her enthusiasm, the team knew that painting was more than just a hobby. It was a meaningful way for Rosie to express herself and engage with something she truly loved.
An empty room full of opportunities
One day, a Mosaic support worker noticed an unused room in the house and saw an opportunity to create something special.
Knowing how much Rosie enjoyed painting, the team began discussing ways they could turn the space into a dedicated art room.
The idea was simple: to create a place where Rosie could enjoy her favourite activity whenever inspiration struck.
With support from Mosaic staff, the room slowly came to life. Rosie helped make decisions about the space, and before long, it was filled with art supplies, paint, brushes, canvases, and many of her completed artworks.
What had once been an empty room became a creative space that reflected Rosie’s interests and personality.
Painting in her own time and space
One of the things staff love most about Rosie’s approach to painting is that she does it entirely on her own terms.
She doesn’t spend hours at an easel or work on large projects for days at a time. Instead, Rosie often paints for five or ten minutes before moving on to another activity.
For Rosie, painting is about enjoyment rather than finishing a masterpiece.
After completing an artwork, she loves showing it to staff and talking about what she has created. Whether it is a colourful pattern or a new design, she takes pride in sharing her work with the people around her.
More than just a room
Today, Rosie’s art room is much more than a place to paint.
It is a space where she can express herself, build confidence, and enjoy a hobby that brings her genuine happiness. It gives her the freedom to be creative and provides an environment that reflects who she is.
The room has also become a talking point within the home, allowing Rosie to share her interests with others and celebrate her achievements.
What makes the space special is the sense of pride Rosie feels when she walks through the door and the joy she experiences when sharing her creations with others.
The art room is a reminder that sometimes small changes can have a big impact.

Supporting what matters most
For Rosie, painting is more than just a hobby. It’s something that brings her joy, helps her express herself, and gives her a chance to share something she is proud of with others.
What started with painting alongside her grandmother has grown into a creative space of her own, filled with colours, memories, and artwork that reflects her personality.
Rosie’s story is a reminder that sometimes the simplest ideas can make a big difference. An empty room became a place where she can enjoy doing what she loves and celebrate her creativity every day.
