When people hear the term Community Access, they often think it’s simply about getting out of the house. But Community Access is much more than that.

It’s about supporting people with disability to do the things that matter to them, whether that’s building friendships, trying new activities, volunteering, learning a new skill or becoming more involved in their local community.

Over time, these experiences can help people feel more confident, connected and independent.

Confidence grows one step at a time

Confidence doesn’t usually happen overnight. It often grows when people have the opportunity to try something new, achieve a goal or do something they may not have thought it was possible before.

Sometimes that might be attending a community activity for the first time. Other times it could simply be feeling more comfortable getting out and about. Every positive experience helps build confidence and encourages people to take the next step. For some people, that next step may be achieving a personal goal.

For example, Mosaic client Keith achieved his dream of attending a Metallica concert with support from our team, creating an experience he had long hoped for.

Building independence

Independence means different things to different people.

For some, it may be learning how to cook. For others, it may be making their own decisions, getting involved in activities they enjoy or becoming more active in their community.

Community Access support focuses on helping people build the skills and confidence they need to achieve their goals. Rather than doing everything for a person, good support encourages independence while providing assistance when needed.

This can empower people to pursue meaningful experiences and personal goals, as seen when Mosaic client Kenneth achieved his goal of travelling to Busselton with support from Mosaic.

Over time, this can help people feel more capable and confident in everyday life.

Creating good connections

Feeling connected to others is an important part of wellbeing.

Community Access provides opportunities to meet people, build relationships and participate in activities that match a person’s interests and goals.

These connections can help reduce feelings of isolation and create a stronger sense of belonging. Many people find that being more involved in their community helps them feel more confident and engaged.

Learning new skills along the way

Every new experience brings an opportunity to learn.

Through Community Access, people can build skills such as communication, problem solving, time management and confidence in new situations.

These skills not only support greater independence but can also help people work towards longer-term goals in other areas of their lives.

Support that suits you

Everyone’s goals, interests and support needs are different.

That’s why personalised support is so important. Our team takes the time to understand what matters to each person and create opportunities that align with their goals and aspirations.

For one person, that might mean becoming more involved in their community, while for another it could mean pursuing a lifelong passion.

Mosaic client Tracey was supported to turn her story into a series of children’s books, showing how personalised support can help people pursue goals that reflect their individual interests and aspirations.
