Personal Growth Through Supported Independent Living

At Mosaic’s Supported Independent Living (SIL) homes, our teams are dedicated to working alongside clients in achieving their personal goals.

One such story is that of Reece, who has been living in a Mosaic SIL home since 2020.

This year, Reece has been focusing on improving his personal hygiene and presenting himself confidently in the community.

Overcoming Challenges

Reece has always found it challenging to maintain his hair, which often becomes tangled and difficult to manage.

His reluctance to cut his hair stems from a fear of looking different and feeling self-conscious about people staring at him.

However, with the support of the Mosaic team, Reece has made great progress in this area.

A Creative Solution

Andrew, a Support Worker at Mosaic, has been working closely with Reece since he moved in. Over the years, Andrew and Reece have built a strong relationship, marked by trust and mutual respect.

Understanding the importance of relationships to Reece, Andrew saw an opportunity to help him overcome his hesitation about haircuts.

Andrew proposed a unique solution: they would both get matching haircuts. This way, Reece wouldn’t feel singled out or self-conscious, as they would both share the same look.

Andrew’s gesture was not just about the haircut; it was a demonstration of solidarity and support.

Strengthening Relationships, Building Confidence

Reece was thrilled with the idea and eagerly agreed. The experience was transformative for him. He felt a sense of camaraderie with Andrew, likening their bond to that of brothers.

Reece was very excited to show his new haircut to the staff. He happily mentioned that Andrew really cares for him because he got his hair cut too, even though he didn’t have to.

This simple yet thoughtful act has strengthened the relationship between Reece and Andrew. It has also had a positive impact on Reece’s confidence and self-esteem.

He now feels more comfortable and prouder of his appearance, which is a significant achievement in his journey towards personal growth.

Heart of Support Work at Mosaic

Marcelle, one of the Home and Community Leaders at Mosaic, shared his thoughts on the value of good support work can bring for people with disability.

Support work is not just about tasks or chores or watching the clock tick by. Behind every task, every routine, and every gesture lies a profound commitment to dignity, care, and compassion.

Family Appreciation

Reece’s mother, Chantelle, has also expressed her happiness with the progress her son is making under Mosaic’s care.

She appreciates the dedication and compassion shown by the staff, particularly Andrew, in supporting Reece’s development.

At Mosaic, we focus on understanding and supporting each person’s unique needs. Reece’s journey shows how our SIL team supports people with disability with dedication and new ideas.

As Reece works towards his goals, the team is always there to support him, ensuring he succeeds.
