Supported Independent Living (SIL): Phil’s veggie garden reaps fruit with support from Mosaic Community Care

Phil lives in one of many Supported Independent Living (SIL) homes managed by Mosaic Community Care in Perth. He loves gardening, and decided to start a veggie garden at his home. This garden has helped him connect with his housemates and the community.

Phil wanted to grow his own fresh vegetables. He enjoys eating homegrown produce and wanted to share this experience with others. As Phil puts it, “I like to grow fresh homegrown produce.”

The Mosaic team and Phil’s housemates helped him set up the garden. They bought seeds, fertilizers, and other gardening supplies for him. This support made it easier for Phil to start the garden. Phil appreciates their help, saying, “They purchase stuff I need for gardening like seeds, fertilizers, etc.”

Phil faced some challenges in setting up the veggie garden as he can’t stand for long periods. To help him, the Mosaic team provided a raised garden bed and special tools. This made gardening more comfortable for Phil. Despite the barriers, Phil remains positive, sharing, “I love the end product and just being outside.”

Phil enjoys watching the plants grow and harvesting fresh vegetables. The garden has also become a place where Phil and his housemates can spend time together. They share gardening tips, stories, and enjoy each other’s company.

This initiative has been a great way for Phil to connect more with other residents and staff while also encouraging greater community engagement.

Home and Community Leader at Mosaic Bonnie Galant says, “Setting up the veggie garden has been great for Phil. He loves planting and watching things grow. It’s a hobby he enjoys and now shares with the staff.”

Bonnie adds, “Phil also loves the worm farm he set up with another support worker. We are all coming up with ideas to help Phil expand his garden. It’s wonderful to see everyone getting involved and helping Phil. His housemates now join him outside while he waters his garden. Phil loves showing me the vegetables he has grown and enjoys eating them.”

General Manager Operations at Mosaic Zak Brearley says, “This initiative has been a great way for Phil to connect more with other residents and staff while also encouraging greater community engagement.”

Phil’s veggie garden shows how Supported Independent Living and Community Access and Support services offered by Mosaic Community Care can help people with disability achieve their goals and connect with their community. With the right support, individuals can live independently, build social connections, and enjoy their hobbies. Phil’s story is an example of what is possible with the right care and support.
