Living in one of Mosaic’s Supported Independent Living (SIL) homes in Perth, Marc recently moved from being a volunteer to securing a part-time job with Challenger Ford in Rockingham, Western Australia.
Marc’s new job is a big step forward for him. His support worker, Nicola from Interchange, says, “Marc assists in cleaning and chamoising cars. He helps to fill the chamois buckets with fresh water and also fills the soap bucket.”
His love and passion for cars were the driving forces behind his decision to take up volunteering. “Ford went above and beyond to give Marc a volunteer position,” Nicola adds.
His decision to volunteer opened doors to new opportunities and allowed him to develop skills that eventually led to his employment.
Finding joy along the journey
The transition from volunteering to paid employment has been a rewarding experience for Marc.
Nicola shares, “Marc enjoys helping clean the different cars that come into the bay. One of his favourite cars to clean is the Mustang. He also enjoys seeing and chatting with his fellow workers at Ford.”
Securing a part-time role has brought a sense of independence and empowerment for Marc. The ability to earn and manage his own money has given Marc a newfound sense of control and confidence.
Getting the right support
The team at Mosaic actively helps Marc manage his work schedule and other weekly commitments.
“By working collaboratively, Marc’s support team (at Mosaic and Interchange) helped him move from a volunteer position to a paid part-time position,” Nicola explains.
Penelope Cooper, Home and Community Leader at Mosaic, has witnessed the positive impact of Marc’s employment on his overall well-being and independence.
“Marc takes responsibility of getting ready for work each day, making sure he has his work clothes, boots, and gloves. He understands that he goes to work, gets paid for his efforts, and then enjoys fun activities like bowling and movies,” Penelope says.
The routine and responsibility associated with employment have provided Marc with a sense of purpose and autonomy.
“Marc looks forward to workdays. He is ready to go out in his uniform, which he wears with pride. Marc enjoys going with his fellow Ford workers, dropping off clean cars, and picking up the next one to clean,” Nicola adds.
