Damion finds a home and stability in Mosaic’s Independent Living Unit

Before finding a home with Mosaic Community Care, Damion faced numerous challenges. “I had no permanent home and moved around a bit before moving into my unit with Mosaic,” he recalls.

The lack of stability made it difficult for Damion to establish a routine and build a secure life. However, everything changed when he moved into one of Mosaic’s Independent Living Units in Perth.

Building confidence and independence

Living in a Mosaic home has had a profound impact on Damion’s daily life and independence. “I didn’t really know how to do a lot of things properly and didn’t really do good at school either,” he admits. The dedicated staff at Mosaic and his Home and Community Leader (HCL), Marcelle Weber, provided daily support, helping him learn and improve his skills.

“The staff and HCL supported me daily to help me learn and do better and slowly build my confidence and trust in people,” Damion shares. With this support, Damion began to take on more responsibilities.

“I started to do a lot of things on my own like looking after my unit better, taking good care of my cat Kit, learning how to budget, and buy groceries weekly that would be healthy and easy for me to prepare,” he says.
These newfound skills have empowered Damion to live more independently.

The power of personalised support

The personalised support from Mosaic staff has made a big difference for Damion.

“The staff at Mosaic really help me feel good about myself and listen, especially Marcelle, who really takes the time to know what I need and help me keep happy and positive,” he explains. This attentive and caring approach has helped Damion feel valued and understood.

“When I listen to the advice and try my best to learn and follow things, then it really works out well for me and that makes me happy,” Damion adds. The positive reinforcement and encouragement from the staff have been crucial in helping him achieve his goals and keep a positive outlook.

From Marcelle’s perspective, Damion has continued to grow in leaps and bounds.

“Since I have been the HCL of this house, I have tried to nurture a positive relationship with Damion to show that he can achieve anything he wants if he puts his mind to it and isn’t afraid to ask for support,” Marcelle says.

He adds, “Damion’s view on the world for a long time is that because of his disability he won’t amount to anything or experience anything like other people do. He is starting to realise that with motivation, support, and a good mindset he can accomplish anything he wants.”

The staff at Mosaic really help me feel good about myself and listen, especially Marcelle, who really takes the time to know what I need and help me keep happy and positive.

A supportive community environment

One of the aspects Damion appreciates most about living in a Mosaic home is the sense of community. He lives in an independent living unit that is situated alongside other units and a Supported Independent Living home managed by Mosaic, creating a village-like atmosphere.

“I live in my unit, but there are others living in other units and a main house close by that I get to see every day,” he says. This close-knit environment has allowed Damion to form meaningful connections with his neighbours.

“I’ve learnt that some others maybe have trouble with learning things that I already know, and I find myself helping them too, so it makes me feel like I’m doing good and helping,” Damion shares. This sense of fellowship and mutual support has enriched his life and given him a sense of purpose.

Kicking personal goals

Mosaic has also played a role in helping Damion achieve his personal goals and aspirations.

After leaving a job he had held for 15 years, Damion was searching for a new opportunity. “I hadn’t found anything I’d like to do,” he says. However, through word of mouth from one of the residents in the other units at Mosaic, Damion found a new job delivering catalogues in his local area.

“I’m so happy because today I have my first delivery to complete,” he beams. This new job has given Damion a renewed sense of purpose and excitement for the future.
