Henry starts gaining confidence with Learn2Adult coaching

For many parents of young adults living with disability, the path to building their child’s independence and decision-making skills can be challenging.

This is true for parents of Henry*, a young man with autism, who found it difficult to make decisions for himself independently.

Henry’s mother shares their journey and the positive impact of Mosaic’s Learn2Adult program.

Limited independence and peer insight

As an only child, Henry doesn’t have siblings to gain insight from, and his fixed thinking often makes it difficult for him to take on board advice from his parents.

“Henry does not have confidence to make a lot of decisions on his own,” his mother explains. “He also does not always want to take on board the advice we offer as parents.”

The turning point came when Henry’s mother heard about the Learn2Adult program through a friend who works at a community centre in Kwinana.

Intrigued by the program’s potential, she decided to explore it further. The Learn2Adult coaching program, designed to help people with disability become independent decision-makers, seemed like a perfect fit for Henry.

Starting with a focus on key life areas

One of the first steps in Henry’s journey with Learn2Adult was identifying the areas of his life where he wanted to make more independent decisions.

For Henry, finding a part-time job was a significant goal. The program’s coaching support played a crucial role in helping him identify and set this goal.

“The coach assisted Henry by leading the way in what he wants to set as a goal. Having it mapped out in a visual form and the mentor guiding him through this is an approach he likes,” his mother notes.

On the path to progress

While Henry is still early in the process, his mother has already noticed some positive changes.

“It is still quite early in the process,” she says, “but Henry is gaining some confidence. He still has a way to go, but this program is helping him.”

The structured support and one-to-one guidance provided by the Learn2Adult coach are building Henry’s confidence by helping him take the first steps towards independent decision making.

This program seems quite unique, and there isn’t really anything else like it that we have been able to find in the Peel Region.

One of a kind program

One of the standout features of the Learn2Adult program is its personalised approach. The coach visits Henry at home, providing a comfortable and familiar environment for him to learn and grow.

“We love that the coach will come to the house,” his mother shares.

“This program seems quite unique, and there isn’t really anything else like it that we have been able to find in the Peel Region. Henry also feels very comfortable with Sophie,” his mother adds, saying he relates to a younger coach and sees her as a peer mentor.
